The stone clock at the edge of town had stopped so long ago that even memory had softened around it. And in winter, when snow fell without wind, the clock became a white altar, each flake landing and staying, as if the sky itself had chosen to pause there.

It was on such a winter afternoon that a girl stopped.

She had been walking quickly, head bowed, thoughts rushing ahead of her like water seeking an edge. But something about the clock – the way it held the snow, the way it refused the urgency of the world – caught her breath mid-step. She stood there, the cold pressing into her coat, and listened.

When she finally turned away, the town resumed its motion. Cars passed. Voices returned. The world remembered how to hurry. Yet something of the clock’s stillness followed her, a quiet she could carry without weight.

The stone clock remains there still, its hands unmoving, its face weathered by years of uncounted days. It keeps no hours, marks no minutes. Instead, it gathers pauses. It holds the fragile, overlooked spaces where nothing is demanded and everything is allowed to be.
